How to Split a Bill Fairly

Equal splits work great for group meals where everyone orders roughly the same amount. But when one person has the Caesar salad and water while another has the steak and two cocktails, itemised splitting is fairer. This calculator handles both scenarios โ€” plus shared starters and bottles that everyone split.

How Tip Is Calculated

Tip is typically calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, though customs vary. In the US, 18โ€“20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. In the UK and Australia, tipping is discretionary and 10% is common. This calculator applies tip to the food subtotal before tax.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Conventionally, tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill. In practice the difference is small โ€” on a $100 bill with 10% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax gives $20 in tip versus $22 post-tax. Both approaches are acceptable; this calculator uses pre-tax by default.

How do I handle someone who didn't drink alcohol?

Use itemised mode. Enter each person's food and drink total separately. Alcohol, cocktails, and wine can be entered as individual items for whoever consumed them. The shared item section works well for bottles of wine the whole table shared.
